What Is Sculptra?

Volume loss happens naturally during the aging process, particularly in the mid-face as the cheeks become hollow and flat. Seasoned plastic surgeon Dr. Alex Mesbahi uses Sculptra Aesthetic, a poly-L-lactic acid-based injectable dermal filler to increase volume in the apples of the cheeks. In addition to improving the volume of the cheeks, Sculptra can correct the appearance of shallow to deep lines and wrinkles, including the nasolabial folds (sometimes known as smile lines) that run from the edges of the nose to the outer corners of the lips. With a unique formula approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), Sculptra promotes the natural production of collagen in your body so even after you stop getting treatments, your complexion will be smoother compared to before Sculptra injections. Schedule an appointment at Mesbahi Plastic Surgery in McLean, VA, Washington, D.C., or Beverly Hills, CA to discover the advantages of this injectable treatment.

What are the Benefits of Sculptra?

There are many reasons people choose Sculptra for their facial rejuvenation needs. Treatment is safe, minimally invasive, and produces long-lasting results. Dr. Mesbahi can tailor the injections to your individual needs, helping you achieve a more youthful and vibrant appearance without undergoing plastic surgery. Additional benefits of Sculptra include:

  • Restore volume and contour to areas that seem hollow
  • Smooth away shallow to deep lines and wrinkles
  • Reduce the appearance of scars from acne or surgery
  • Stimulate collagen production to give you a more youthful complexion
  • Cost-effective compared to facelift surgery or other invasive procedures

Candidates for sculptra

Sculptra is best for patients who want to improve fullness in their mid-face without surgical implants. Candidates may have naturally hollow cheeks while other patients experience volume loss with age. Sculptra dermal filler may also be used to improve shallow to severe facial lines and wrinkles, including the nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and chin wrinkles. Since Sculptra helps to increase the body's natural production of collagen, many Sculptra patients will have an improvement in the overall health and appearance of their complexion.

How Is sculptra Performed?

Following your consultation to determine your unique treatment plan, you will receive your Sculptra injections in one of our private procedure rooms. Your injector will apply numbing cream or local anesthetic prior to sterilizing and marking the injection sites. Once you are prepared, the filler is injected down to the deeper layers of the skin at the chosen sites. For best results, Dr. Alex Mesbahi recommends a series of four injections that are each scheduled at Mesbahi Plastic Surgery about three weeks apart.

What Can I Expect After Sculptra?

Following your appointment, you may have mild to moderate swelling, redness, tenderness, or bruising at the injection sites that should subside on its own in a few days. To speed healing, you can apply cold packs to the injection sites. You should avoid UV exposure after your injection and use sunscreen. Many patients will have visible improvements immediately following their treatment with complete results appearing after several months, as the increased production of collagen improves the health of the skin. If performed in a series of injections over the course of 3 – 4 months, your results may be visible for up to two years.

Sculptra FAQ

How much does Sculptra cost?
Dermal fillers like Sculptra can range in price depending on how much you need to achieve your desired results. Some patients may also need several treatments for the optimal outcome. During your consultation, your injector will listen to your concerns and develop a treatment plan for your specific budget.

How does Sculptra work?
The main ingredient in Sculptra, poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), is a treatment that works within the dermis of the skin to help stimulate the production of collagen. Sculptra can help to restore your skin’s inner structure, and volume as more collagen is produced. The increased collagen can effectively fill out moderate to severe folds and wrinkles.

Are Sculptra injections safe?
Approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), Sculptra has been used around the world safely since the late 1990s. Side effects are rare and usually mild, including slight pain, swelling, redness, and bruising. Occasionally, small bumps may appear if too much pressure is put on the injected area. Call us if you have any abnormal or lasting side effects.

What is the best age to receive Sculptra?
Treatment with Sculptra can help if you want to reduce the visibility of lines and wrinkles. It is often used to improve chin wrinkles, fine lines surrounding the lips, and the deeper lines between the mouth and nose (nasolabial folds). The most common age to receive Sculptra injections is starting around their late 30s to early 50s; however, Sculptra can be used on most patients, as long as they are over the age of 18 years old.

How long do results last?
To make the results last longer, some patients may want to receive multiple treatments. A major advantage Sculptra has over other fillers is that the results can last as long as two years. Since Sculptra continues to increase the natural production of collagen in your skin, results may appear more gradually.
