what is Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation or mentoplasty is a common cosmetic treatment that reshapes the jawline for patients who have a small and recessed chin. Many times when a chin lacks shape and size, it can create a weak profile. Both surgical and nonsurgical chin augmentation can be performed to improve the appearance of your chin. At Mesbahi Plastic Surgery in McLean, VA, Washington, D.C., or Beverly Hills, CA, patients can choose from chin implants or dermal fillers to enhance their profile. Patients can also choose from a variety of implant shapes and sizes to recontour their chin. Contact either of our locations to schedule a private consultation with seasoned plastic surgeon Dr. Alex Mesbahi to learn more. We look forward to serving you.

What are the benefits of chin augmentation?

When the chin is small or recessed, it can make our other facial features appear larger or more dominant. Many people feel that a weak or small chin detracts from their overall appearance. Chin augmentation can help to balance out your features and create a more harmonious look. Additionally, chin implants can also give individuals a stronger and more defined jawline. Dr. Mesbahi works closely with each patient to make sure they are happy with their new look.

who is a Candidate for chin augmentation?

Chin augmentation is a procedure that is popular among both men and women. If you are displeased by the size and shape of your chin and do not like the weak profile it offers, this cosmetic enhancement can improve the lower region of your face and neck. It is also common for our patients to combine rhinoplasty with their chin augmentation treatment. This combined approach can provide a stunning improvement to your facial features and overall cosmetic. Whether you choose a surgical or nonsurgical approach or a combination of both, Dr. Mesbahi will create a custom treatment plan that suits your specific needs and goals.

How Does Surgical chin Augmentation Work?

For surgical chin augmentation, general anesthesia will be administered or another form of anesthesia, such as IV sedation. Once you are prepped, Dr. Mesbahi will make an incision beneath your chin and create a groove or pocket to secure the implant in place. Once the implant is secured and positioned on the top of the chin bone, the incision will be closed. In some cases, the incision may be placed inside the lower lip where it connects to your gumline. Both incision techniques help to hide scars. Patients can decide to include dermal fillers into their surgical plan as well.

HOW DOES NonSURGICAL CHIN AUGMENTATION WORK?

With nonsurgical chin augmentation, Dr. Mesbahi will use dermal fillers to enhance and reshape your lower face. During your first visit, Dr. Mesbahi will determine the type of filler that will offer you the best results and the areas in which the filler will be placed. When you come in for your procedure, Dr. Mesbahi will numb the target areas and administer the selected filler. Multiple injections may be needed to attain your desired results. Typically, this process only takes about 10 – 15 minutes to complete, and you will be free to return to your usual activities afterward. It's important to note that fillers are temporary, and if you'd like to maintain your results, future treatments will be needed.

What Can I Expect After Chin Augmentation?

Cosmetic chin enhancement creates immediate visible results, which can be very thrilling for our clients. Regardless of the approach, facial swelling and bruising may be present right after your procedure, but these symptoms will dissipate over a short timeframe. Bruising is more common for those who undergo a surgical enhancement. These symptoms can also be eased with over-the-counter pain medication and cold compresses. For those who selected nonsurgical augmentation, it's important to avoid touching or applying pressure to your face for the first few days to prevent the filler from spreading in unwanted areas.

chin augmentation faq

Will chin augmentation fix my double chin?
Chin augmentation is meant to offer you a stronger, sharper look to the jawline. If you have a double chin, you might prefer a liposuction procedure where the excess fat in your submental area (the upper neck below the jawline) is addressed. Occasionally, this technique alone can give you a better profile and look without needing to have an implant procedure. Dr. Mesbahi will go over your options and his recommendations in your first appointment.

Can I combine other facial surgeries with chin augmentation?
Yes. Many people combine a chin implant with another facial surgery, like a facelift or nose reshaping surgery. Dr. Mesbahi can help you decide which procedures best fit your concerns and wants in your initial consultation. It can be difficult to tell on your own what procedure(s) might be best for you, which is why your consultation with Dr. Mesbahi is so important. He will use his years of experience to help you decide on your treatment plan.

Is chin augmentation painful?
Since safe, effective sedation is used, patients should not experience any discomfort during their procedure. Generally, patients will experience mild swelling, bruising, and pain after their procedure. These symptoms are normal and will dissipate as the treatment area heals.
