what is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic nose surgery that is used to improve the shape and size of the nose. It can also help improve breathing function in some patients. Dr. Alex Mesbahi is an experienced and highly trained cosmetic surgeon who specializes in nose reshaping surgery. He is not only an expert in traditional rhinoplasty but revision rhinoplasty as well. Revision rhinoplasty is generally reserved for those who have already undergone a nose surgery but are unhappy with their results. If you would like to improve the projection of your nose, address overly large nostrils, a bulbous tip, or revise your results after a previous nose job, call Mesbahi Plastic Surgery to schedule a consult. We have locations in McLean, VA, Washington, D.C., and Beverly Hills, CA.

who is a Candidate for rhinoplasty?

Adults and teenagers over 16 years of age are candidates for cosmetic nose surgery. If you find yourself frustrated with the appearance of your nose and have distinct issues you wish to enhance or repair, this procedure may be the right answer. It is important that expectations are discussed, as your facial appearance will be changed. In addition, facial maturity should also be complete. This will be thoroughly assessed during your consultation, especially for individuals under 21.

rhinoplasty Technique

Rhinoplasty is performed with general anesthesia and is generally considered an outpatient procedure. Rhinoplasty incorporates various surgical techniques, depending on what is being addressed. Dr. Mesbahi performs rhinoplasty using either a closed approach or an open method. The goal during the procedure is to decrease or eliminate excess cartilage, tissue, and bone for reshaping. The nasal features are repositioned while the skin is re-draped over the newly improved framework. Stitches are implemented either inside the nose or along the natural, external crease.

after your procedure

After your cosmetic nose surgery, you will be carefully monitored in the recovery room, and then our nurses will release you to recover at home. The nose will be swollen, bruised, and sore for the first few days. In most cases, there is some discoloration under the eyes in addition to the nose. Cold compresses and pain medication can help with these effects. Your follow-up appointment with Dr. Mesbahi will be scheduled within 72 hours after surgery to assess your healing progress. On average, it takes about 2 – 4 weeks to look normal following nose surgery. Optimal results will occur once your nose is fully healed.

Will my insurance cover functional nose surgery?
Although cosmetic rhinoplasty is not covered by insurance, functional rhinoplasty that is medically necessary to improve your breathing may be covered. If you plan on using your insurance, please tell Dr. Mesbahi during your consultation. We can help you submit the needed information and paperwork to your insurance provider to process your claim.

Are there nonsurgical options to change my nose?
To smooth the appearance of lumps and bumps on your nose, a hyaluronic acid-based wrinkle filler (like JUVÉDERM) may be an option. A filler can temporarily correct minor imperfections, which may help you decide to get a rhinoplasty. Nose surgery is better for larger changes, long-lasting results, and to improve the internal structure for better function. At your consultation, Dr. Mesbahi will let you know if you may be a candidate for nonsurgical nose reshaping.

What about ethnic rhinoplasty?
Ethnic rhinoplasty is about improving the appearance of the nose while still keeping your cultural identity. This may be a concern if you are Asian, African-American, or Middle Eastern. In your consultation with Dr. Mesbahi, you can discuss what you want to keep and what you want to change. This will allow him to customize your treatment plan so you get your best results.

Can I combine nose surgery with other facial surgeries?
Yes. Many patients decide to combine nose surgery with another cosmetic procedure, like chin or cheek augmentation. Combining surgeries for a dramatic result can be reviewed during your consultation with Dr. Mesbahi. Once he understands your goals, he can help you decide which procedures should be in your treatment plan. Nose reshaping surgery can help make your whole face appear more balanced so you should wait to see your results before considering another procedure.
