What Is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a procedure that redefines the breasts to create a fuller appearance. It is known as one of the most desired cosmetic surgeries, providing women who are unhappy with their breast size with numerous options for improvement. With the help of implants, this enhancement surgery improves breast shape, size, and symmetry to produce an appealing and balanced outcome. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Alex Mesbahi is highly experienced in performing breast augmentation and has helped countless women achieve their dream look. During your consultation, he will assess your aesthetic desires and concerns and inform you of all of the options available, while also tailoring a surgical plan to exceed your goals. If you are considering breast augmentation, reach out to Mesbahi Plastic Surgery in McLean, VA and Washington, D.C.
What Is a Breast Augmentation With Fat Transfer?
Breast augmentation with fat transfer has two very appealing benefits. Rather than using saline or silicone implants, a breast augmentation with fat transfer uses liposuction to remove fat from other parts of your body, so it can be transferred into your breasts. Not only do you get the benefit of naturally enhancing your breasts, but you can also reduce stubborn fat in areas of the body where you don't want it. While it may not give you the same dramatic size increases and lift that implants can, breast augmentation with fat transfer is a more natural option compared to implants. If this breast enhancement technique sounds appealing, you can talk to Dr. Mesbahi about this option during your consultation to see if breast augmentation with fat transfer is right for you.
Which Breast Implant is right for me?
At Mesbahi Plastic Surgery in McLean, VA, and Washington, D.C., breast implants are an excellent option for women who desire to enhance their breast size and shape. Candidates for breast implants may include individuals who wish to achieve fuller, more proportionate breasts, have experienced volume loss due to weight fluctuations or pregnancy, or desire to restore breast volume after mastectomy or injury. During your initial consult with Dr. Mesbahi, the correct implant will be selected based on your body's shape, current breast size, and cosmetic goals. Breast implants come in different sizes and profiles, as well as shapes and textures — each of which is considered carefully in order to reach your desired look. Today, the most common implant types are saline or silicone, both safely approved by the FDA. It is important to mention that patients must be 18 years old if considering saline breast implants or 22 years old for silicone implants.
Breast implant size is chosen based on the number of CCs of silicone or saline used. To decide on the appropriate amount, Dr. Mesbahi will look at how much original tissue exists and the size you hope to achieve. In the operating room, it is common for Dr. Mesbahi to temporarily switch out multiple implants to get a better idea of a suitable fit.
Breast implants are produced in either a teardrop or round shape. Both shapes are commonly used; however, the majority of our patients select a round shape. It generally looks more natural while adding a fullness to the top portion of the breast that many patients desire.
Implant profile refers to how far out the implant projects. In other words, this is what is visible from the side angle. Most projections include a profile that ranges from low to extra high.
Choosing Your implants
At Mesbahi Plastic Surgery, we understand all of the considerations may appear overwhelming, but picking the right implant is somewhat easy once the goals are discussed during the consultation. These considerations, combined with the extensive knowledge of Dr. Mesbahi, can ensure the right results are achieved.
Breast Augmentation Reviews
"34 Yr Old Nose Job. McLean, VA - I never liked my profile - I wanted a smaller nose overall. I also had a deviated septum. I know that sounds like a cop-out but considering I didn't use a penny of insurance money, I assure you I really wanted to breathe better. I also chose Dr Mesbahi over an ENT, where I could have received insurance $ for my deviated septum, however I wanted amazing results cosmetically and I know an ENT cannot guarantee that. I have a friend who had her nose done by an ENT and one nostril is noticeably larger than the other AND her nose is crooked. Why go through all the pain and inconvenience (time off from work, not leaving the house, etc.) for disappointing results?Cons:- Cost- Not being able to leave the house for a week - you CAN leave the house, IF you don't mind people seeing you with a splint, which I did.- The risk of not really looking like "yourself" after.Pro:- Digital photos ahead of time prepared me for what the end result would be.- I have a client who worked for a plastic surgeon in Georgetown and she assured me that Dr Mesbahi was one of THE best in the area for Rhinoplasty.- Dr Mesbahi did breast augmentation for me previously and I was really pleased with the outcome.- Dr Mesbahi is really professional, yet has a great bedside manner. He's easy to talk to and always makes me feel comfortable.- At first when the splint came off, I was nervous because it did not look like me AT ALL. But from the side, my profile was already what I desired. After about a week with the splint off, the swelling was better and each week it has settled more and more.- Pain was completely manageable. I was never in excruciating pain."- N. / RealSelf / Aug 14, 2015
"Needed an Upgrade! McLean, VA - I had been thinking about having a breast augmentation for many years and finally decided this was the year! I had visited a few different plastic surgeons offices to do some homework and decided on the National Center for Plastic Surgery and Dr. Ali Mesbahi. At the time of my initial consult, the staff was very helpful and accommodating. I spent over an hour with the surgeon discussing all aspects of the procedure and was given the opportunity to try on implant sizes. I even was encouraged to come back and try the implants on a second time with a friend which I did! The experience overall was very comfortable and welcoming. The evening after my surgery, Dr. Mesbahi called to check in which I thought was so nice!"- V. / RealSelf / Jan 18, 2015

Take care now and God bless."- Anonymous / Office Visit / Mar 07, 2011
"Surgery Scheduled 5/22 - I'm a mother of 2, breastfed both, decreased from ~C to ~B and noticed some sagging. I'm roughly 5'1 and ~150lbs. I'd like to achieve a D/DD and promised myself that by 30 I would do this (which is in 6 months). I was originally scheduled for surgery on 3/19 but due to COVID was finally rescheduled to 5/22 (which is this coming Friday)! I'm extremely excited to see my results. I've chosen Dr. Alex Mesbahi (who happens to have great reviews) to perform this surgery for me. Previously he and I had decided on 385-415cc silicone gummy bear implants. However, I kicked it up a notch and requested 450cc. Well, here goes nothing! :)"- V. / RealSelf / May 24, 2020

Am I A Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
The choice to have breast enhancement surgery at Mesbahi Plastic Surgery is personal. If you are thinking about having this procedure, it is important you do it for the right reasons. You should be healthy with breasts that are developed and be the right age to receive implants. If you are dissatisfied with the shape of your chest because they appear flat, you may benefit from this cosmetic breast treatment. Moreover, if your breasts have been affected by weight loss or pregnancy, this surgery can bring them back to life with increased volume. Breast augmentation is also beneficial for those who have limited breast tissue.
What Is the Surgical Technique for Breast Augmentation?
Incision placement as well as implant placement are considerations that will need to be made ahead of surgery. During breast augmentation, Dr. Mesbahi makes an incision and then places the the appropriate breast implant into position. There are a couple of techniques that may be used for implant placement. These include either submuscular placement (under the pec muscle), or submammary/subglandular placement (over the pec muscle). Where to insert the breast implant depends on numerous factors including the size and type of implant. Regardless of the incision, scarring is generally unnoticeable. Placement and location are determined based on your body type, implant size, and lifestyle.
What Can I Expect After Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure that involves the use of general anesthesia. Once the incision is made, the breast implant will be inserted through the incision opening and deposited into a pocket created for it and then secured into its correct position. After this process, the incision is closed with sutures or surgical adhesives. You will then be taken into a recovery room and monitored prior to being released. You will be instructed to continue wearing a medical sports bra to assist with swelling. Within a few days, the swelling will start to slowly go away, and the breasts will begin to feel normal as they settle into their new position. You can return to normal activities within the first week; however, physical exertion such as exercise should be delayed for roughly 6 – 8 weeks. Breast augmentation results in beautiful outcomes that feel and appear natural.
Breast Augmentation FAQs
Do I need a breast lift or augmentation?
Your plan might include breast augmentation, a breast lift, or both. A breast lift removes excess skin and improves the breasts while implants address the size and shape of the breasts. During your consultation at Mesbahi Plastic Surgery with Dr. Mesbahi, he will listen to your concerns and goals before explaining your treatment options.
Can I breastfeed with implants?
If you would like to breastfeed after breast surgery, talk to Dr. Mesbahi during your consultation. It's usually possible to breastfeed after breast augmentation with the right placement and technique. Breastfeeding and pregnancy can alter your results so it is better to wait until after you are done having children to have breast surgery.
Can I have my implants removed?
You may decide at some point that you would like to remove or replace your implants. If this happens, Dr. Mesbahi offers breast revision surgery in McLean, VA and Washington, D.C. During the revision surgery, your current implants will be either replaced with different implants or removed altogether. If you want to have your implants removed, you may need to have a breast lift because larger implants can stretch your skin. For any questions or concerns after your breast augmentation, schedule an appointment at Mesbahi Plastic Surgery to learn more about your options.
Do implants cause breast cancer?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating a link between breast implants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). This isn't breast cancer but a cancer of the immune cells. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), implant-related ALCL is very rare and if caught early, it is easy to treat. Dr. Mesbahi encourages all patients with implants to get regular screenings for breast cancer. You should contact Mesbahi Plastic Surgery if you see any concerns, like swelling.
How much does breast augmentation cost?
Your cost for breast augmentation will vary depending on your choices and if you are getting any other surgeries. As soon as your treatment plan is made in your consultation, Dr. Mesbahi will go over estimated costs as well as financing. To make sure you are happy with your results and they last a long time, it is better to focus on quality over costs.
