what is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that uses silicone or saline implants to enhance the breasts for a fuller-looking contour. It is often considered to be one of the most common cosmetic surgeries, granting women who dislike their breasts' appearance a safe and effective solution for long-lasting improvement. With the help of implants, this enhancement surgery improves breast shape, size, and symmetry to attain a natural-looking outcome. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Alex Mesbahi is highly experienced in performing breast augmentation and has helped countless women achieve their dream look. If you are considering breast augmentation, reach out to Mesbahi Plastic Surgery in McLean, VA, Washington, D.C, or Beverly Hills, CA.

Breast Augmentation With Fat Transfer

Another option offered by Dr. Mesbahi is breast augmentation with fat transfer. This breast augmentation technique has two very appealing benefits. Rather than using saline or silicone implants, a breast augmentation with fat transfer uses liposuction to remove fat from other parts of your body and then uses the fat to enhance your breasts. Not only do you get the benefit of naturally enhancing your breasts without implants, but you can also reduce stubborn fat in areas of the body where you don't want it. While it may not give you the same dramatic size increases and lift that implants can, breast augmentation with fat transfer is a more natural option that avoids implants. If this combination breast enhancement technique sounds appealing, you can talk to Dr. Mesbahi about this option during your consultation to see if breast augmentation with fat transfer is right for you.

Which Breast Implant is right for me?

When you are in your consultation with Dr. Mesbahi, the correct implant will be selected based on your body's shape, current breast size, and cosmetic goals. Breast implants come in different sizes and profiles, as well as shapes and textures — each of which is considered carefully in order to reach your desired look. Today, the most common implant types are saline or silicone, both widely chosen and safely approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). An important fact is that patients considering saline implants must be at least 18 years old while patients must be a minimum of 22 years old in order to undergo augmentation with silicone. Other considerations include a form-stable implant known as a gummy bear implant and fat grafting (known as a fat transfer). Aside from the type of augmentation chosen, there are other notable factors to decide.

Size

Breast implant size is chosen based on the number of CCs of silicone or saline used. To decide on the appropriate amount, Dr. Mesbahi will look at how much original tissue exists and the size you hope to achieve. In the operating room, it is common for Dr. Mesbahi to temporarily switch out multiple implants to get a better idea of a suitable fit.

Shape

Breast implants are produced in either a teardrop or round shape. Both shapes are commonly used; however, the majority of our patients select a round shape. It generally looks more natural while adding a fullness to the top portion of the breast that many patients desire.

Profile

Implant profile refers to how far out the implant projects. In other words, this is what one sees from the side view. Most projections include low, intermediate, high, or extra high.

selecting Your implants

We understand all of the considerations may appear overwhelming, but picking the right implant is somewhat easy once the goals are discussed during the consultation. These considerations, combined with the training of Dr. Mesbahi, make certain the right outcome is met.

who is a good Candidate for breast augmentation?

The choice to have breast enhancement surgery is personal. If you are considering this surgery, it is essential you do it for yourself. You should be physically healthy with breasts that are fully formed and be the appropriate age to have implants. If you are unhappy with the size and shape of your breasts because they seem deflated, you could benefit from this cosmetic breast treatment. In addition, if your breasts have been affected by aging, nursing, or weight loss, this procedure can restore their natural shape and increase volume. It's also a welcomed answer if you weight train or have limited breast tissue.

breast augmentation Technique

Incision placement, as well as implant placement, are considerations that are generally made before surgery. Dr. Mesbahi commonly makes incisions in the underarm, around the areola, or the natural breast fold to conceal incisions for the most natural-looking appearance possible. During your initial consultation, Dr. Mesbahi can make a recommendation on which incision location he thinks is best for your needs and goals. There are also a couple of methods that may be applied for implant placement. These include either submuscular placement, under the pec muscle, or subglandular, behind the breast tissue but over the pectoral muscle. Where to insert the implant depends on numerous factors, including the type of implant selected, the degree of enlargement, your body type, and lifestyle.

After breast surgery

Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure that involves the use of general anesthesia. Once the incision is made, the breast implant will be inserted through the incision opening and deposited into a pocket created for it, and then secured into its correct position. Once the implant is in position, the incision is closed with sutures or surgical adhesives. Each patient will be taken to a private recovery space and observed and monitored prior to being released. You will be instructed to continue wearing a compression garment to assist with swelling. Several days after surgery, the bruising and swelling will start to dissipate, and the breasts will begin to feel normal as they get used to their new position. The majority of patients can return to normal activities within several days; however, physical exertion, such as exercise, should be delayed for about 6 – 8 weeks. Breast augmentation produces beautiful outcomes that feel and appear natural. This procedure oftentimes can be life-changing for many individuals, allowing them the chance to feel more sexy and confident.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

Do I need a breast lift or augmentation?
Your plan might include breast augmentation, a breast lift, or both. A breast lift removes excess skin and improves the breasts while implants address the size and shape of the breasts. During your consultation with Dr. Mesbahi, he will listen to your concerns and goals before explaining your treatment options.

Can I breastfeed with implants?
If you would like to breastfeed after breast surgery, talk to Dr. Mesbahi during your consultation. It's usually possible to breastfeed after breast augmentation with the right placement and technique. Breastfeeding and pregnancy can alter your results so it is better to wait until after you are done having children to have breast surgery.

Can I have my implants removed?
You may decide at some point that you would like to remove or replace your implants. If this happens, Dr. Mesbahi offers breast revision surgery. During the revision surgery, your current implants will be either replaced with different implants or removed altogether. If you want to have your implants removed, you may need to have a breast lift because larger implants can stretch your skin. For any questions or concerns after your breast augmentation, schedule an appointment at Mesbahi Plastic Surgery to learn more about your options.

Do implants cause breast cancer?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating a link between breast implants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). This isn't breast cancer but a cancer of the immune cells. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), implant-related ALCL is very rare and if caught early, it is easy to treat. Dr. Mesbahi encourages all patients with implants to get regular screenings for breast cancer. You should contact Mesbahi Plastic Surgery if you see any concerns, like swelling.
