What are the benefits of prp therapy?

Perks affiliated with platelet-rich plasma therapy sessions at Mesbahi Plastic Surgery in McLean, VA may include:

  • Triggering your own natural healing process
  • Stimulation of collagen and elastin generation in the skin
  • More even, satiny, and younger-looking skin
  • Restored volume to the skin
  • Personalized treatment plans

Who is a Candidate for prp therapy?

Men and women who would like to improve their skin texture and tone or attain a fuller head of hair are typically the best candidates for PRP therapy. Since it is a natural treatment that promotes collagen production and helps stimulate hair growth, it is a fantastic option for men and women. If you have dull-looking skin or thinning hair, call our office to set up a consultation with Dr. Mesbahi. During your initial visit, Dr. Mesbahi can review all of your cosmetic concerns and help answer any questions you may have to determine if PRP therapy is right for you. If you have any blood disorders or a skin disease, PRP therapy is not recommended.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING Prp therapy

Once you are comfortably seated in one of our private treatment rooms, we will take a small sample of blood from your arm and place it into a centrifuge machine. After about 15 minutes, the different components of the blood will be separated and ready for injection. We will place your rich plasma into a sterile syringe and inject it into the predetermined treatment areas. The PRP procedure typically only takes about 5 – 10 minutes if you are addressing dermal concerns. For those who are treating hair loss, microneedling will be performed first and then the PRP serum will be applied to your scalp to seep into the skin.

HOW LONG IS RECOVERY AFTER PRP therapy?

Platelet-rich plasma naturally promotes collagen production and elastin to reveal tighter and younger-looking skin. It also aids in promoting hair follicle production to boost hair growth. As it utilizes your own blood, the risk of allergic or adverse reaction is eliminated. You can expect the treatment area to appear a little red after the procedure as a few red blood cells can make it into the plasma. A cold compress can be applied to help minimize discomfort and swelling. Multiple sessions are generally needed to achieve your best results. For individuals who are treating hair loss, results are generally noticed after 4 – 6 months following your initial treatment.

PRP Therapy faqs

How much blood is drawn for a PRP treatment?
Only a small amount of blood is needed for PRP — typically one to two small tubes, similar to what’s taken during routine lab work. The blood is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelets, which are injected into the treatment area. Most patients find the process quick, comfortable, and easy to tolerate.

Can you get PRP for hair loss while using topical hair loss products at the same time?

Yes, PRP therapy can often be combined with topical hair growth products, such as minoxidil, for enhanced results. Using both may help strengthen hair follicles from the inside and outside. However, your provider may recommend pausing topicals briefly around treatment days to minimize scalp irritation and ensure optimal absorption of PRP.

Is PRP the same as PRF therapy?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) both use your blood’s healing components, but they’re not identical. PRF is a newer formulation that spins at a lower speed, creating a thicker concentrate that releases growth factors more slowly. Both can promote tissue repair and collagen stimulation, but your provider can recommend which option best fits your treatment goals.

What are the risks and complications of PRP therapy?
Potential side effects from PRP when done alone are minor and include only prolonged bruising and swelling. When you get PRP therapy with microneedling, potential risks may include infection, mild scarring, pigment changes, and delayed healing. This is you should have cosmetic treatments done by an experienced practitioner.

Will PRP help replenish volume?
A treatment of PRP therapy cannot restore volume. While PRP treatments offer great results because it rejuvenates the appearance of the complexion and helps promote the production of collagen and elastin, PRP treatments are not meant to replenish volume. If you would like to contour certain areas on the face that have lost volume, you may add dermal fillers to your PRP treatment plan.

Is PRP therapy painful?
PRP injections feel like a dermal filler or BOTOX® injection but with the extra step of extracting the plasma. Generally, most patients feel a mild pressure or pinch at the time of injection. If you are worried about feeling pain, ask if you can receive numbing cream before the injection is performed.
